PhytoGen Cottonseed committed to offering growers a strong choiceINDIANAPOLIS - June 1, 2007 - PhytoGen Cottonseed remains committed to offering high-performing varieties with innovative solutions so cotton growers have viable alternatives for their operation. In relation to the recent announcements regarding mergers in the cotton industry, Dow AgroSciences recognizes that many customers may believe that their choices will be more limited by these developments. Industry Commitment "While others in the industry have been focused on getting bigger, we've been working on getting better," says Joe Sobek, global business leader for cotton at Dow AgroSciences. "Everyone at PhytoGen Cottonseed is focused on continuing to develop the best varieties for cotton growers. Whenever growers plant varieties from us, we want them to be confident they've planted the best. "We have become the elite choice in Pima and Acala cotton in the West and this success is the foundation for how we've developed our early and midseason Upland varieties for the South. These widely adaptable varieties include PHY 485 WRF, which in 2006 university Official Variety Trials was consistently one of the best Roundup Ready Flex stacked varieties." The foundation at PhytoGen Cottonseed starts with a commitment to one of the industry's most stringent research, breeding and development programs. Today, this program capitalizes on new molecular breeding techniques that allow us to introduce new advancements in cottonseed varieties quicker than ever. The result from this program is continued introduction of new varieties that start with proprietary germplasm for high yields. Through its breeding program, PhytoGen Cottonseed is introducing Upland varieties that will "raise the bar" on cotton quality characteristics. PhytoGen Cottonseed not only committed itself to quality variety development, but it was the first company to offer an alternative in-plant insect protection trait with two-gene WideStrike. This trait provides season-long control of yield-robbing lepidopteran pests and is highly competitive with Bollgard II® from Monsanto. Vigorous Pipeline In 2008, PhytoGen Cottonseed is releasing PHY 375 WRF, its first early season WideStrike/Roundup Ready® Flex stacked variety. The release of this new variety is the latest in a portfolio of varieties that in 2009 will start including a full-season offering and innovative, in-plant technologies like root-knot nematode, reniform nematode and seedling disease resistance; plant bug tolerance; specialty fibers; and much more. An important development in the pipeline is a new generation of herbicide-tolerant traits. "Dow AgroSciences plans to bring to market the best complementary trait to improve and enhance the Roundup Ready technology system," Sobek says. "This new trait will provide tolerance to multiple classes of herbicide chemistry and address the growing number of glyphosate-resistant and other hard-to-control weeds. This new trait is being validated in several crops, including cotton, and will be an excellent companion to our next generation of in-plant insect protection. "We want growers to feel that they continue to have the freedom to choose despite the recent consolidation in the cotton industry. The performance of our varieties and continued investment in innovative technologies demonstrate why we're the right choice this season and in seasons to come. We challenge growers to let us prove why our varieties pay off in the field and at the gin."
