Seed Quality

There's no doubt that seed quality is of utmost interest to cotton growers. That's why PhytoGen®  Cottonseed sets internal quality criteria for our seed higher than typical industry standards. It's simple – we don't sell you seed unless we know it is top quality.

Quality Starts From The Ground Up
Seed quality is the result of many things. Strategic growing areas, equipment hygiene and strict attention to seed certification guidelines all contribute to high-quality PhytoGen brand cottonseed.

PhytoGen Cottonseed selects growing areas with:

  • Minimal rainfall, to protect the seed from enzyme activation and subsequent degradation associated with premature germination
  • Long growing seasons, which contribute to uniformly high seed maturity
  • Good uniform soils, which leads to uniform crop maturation and more precise roguing (removal) of off-type plants

PhytoGen Cottonseed strives to keep all farm and industrial equipment used in seed production clean and free of any other seed in order to reduce contamination. We also follow established guidelines for seed certification:

  • Acceptable prior cropping history
  • Proper isolation distances from other fields to prevent contamination through pollen transfer
  • Use of the proper class of parent seed (breeder, foundation or registered)
  • Minimum acceptable seed quality standards
  • Third-party verification of the above

Quality Control Means Quality Seed
PhytoGen brand cottonseed is grown in California and Texas. All Acala and Pima varieties are grown and sold in California.

After delinting, all seed is tested for warm germination, cool germination (vigor), purity, other crop seed, inert matter and weed seed. Cool vigor is the ultimate indicator of seed quality, and all testing is done in-house and by an outside official seed lab. Transgenic varieties receive additional purity tests.
